Letter from Principal Matt Frederickson

GCAA Families: The Board of Directors held its annual meeting on June 25. The meeting agenda included revisions to the academic calendar for 2015-2016. Due to changes to the Saint Louis Public Schools calendar for the coming year, announced in late May, it was necessary to make similar adjustments. Simply put, when SLPS and Grand Center are both in session on the same days, student attendance is higher in our schools.Frederickson_Matt-200x300 The first day of school is Monday, August 17, for all Confluence Charter Schools. The date is about a week later than previously expected, which was August 11. The full GCAA 2015-16 Calendar is attached. Also, as a result of this board meeting, we are able to announce some new staff that will be joining GCAA this year. With the addition of a senior grade level, we were able to add some new teaching positions and restructure the administrative team to better suit the needs of our larger student body. Below is a partial listing of new staff that will be joining GCAA this Fall: LISA KACZMARCZYK, Upper Academy Principal; Lisa has served as a high school principal for 15 years at a school that was consistently named by Newsweek Magazine as one of America’s Best High Schools and by US News & World Report as one of America’s top high schools. Before serving in administration, Lisa was a vocal music teacher. Dr. DOTTIE BARBEAU (part time), Student Acceleration and Assessment Coordinator; Dottie has served for more than 25 years as a gifted education teacher, Curriculum Director, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, and Director of Gifted Education. She also serves as an adjunct instructor for Webster University. CHRISTINE NOBBE (part time), Instructional Coach; Chris has served for 12 years as an instructor for Webster University teaching courses in the areas of Curriculum Design, The Gifted Learner; Affective Needs of Gifted Learners; Creativity in the Classroom; Gender Issues in Education; supervising practicum students. She has taught for more than 30 years in gifted education and grades 6-12 learning disabilities. RUSSELL SMITH, Upper Academy Counselor; Rusty has served for over 15 years as a High School Counselor, and for several years before that as an English and Speech/Debate teacher. He was the 2009 St. Louis Suburban Secondary Counselor of the Year and the 2011 Missouri State Secondary Counselor of the Year. Also, returning to GCAA, but in new capacities are REBECCA IRVING, Dean of Students; and TED FRIGILLANA, Lower Academy Principal. We were also able to hire several new teachers, to accommodate the senior class, that will make wonderful additions to our staff. More on these individuals very soon. At the present time, all vacancies for the 2015-16 school year have been filled. We are excited to bring exceptional instructors coming to us with a wide range of experiences to our classrooms. *Be watching for a summer mailing with forms, supply lists, and information regarding student orientations. *Save the Date! Tuesday evening, July 28th for an informal meet and greet for families to become better acquainted with our administration and learn about exciting plans for this school year.
