[This article was written by 7th Grader Isabel Brieler, a member of the Website Reporting Club]. On Saturday February 23rd GCAA’s chess team took a trip to Lindbergh High School to play in a scholastic tournament. The team has two sixth graders, Christopher Corriveau and Diamond Abdus-Shakoor. They also have two seventh graders, Galen Selligman and Isabel Brieler. They have been attending tournaments like this since the beginning of the year, and they meet on Thursdays. At the Lindbergh tournament, Diamond and Isabel won individual trophies and the whole team won second place in the Eighth and Under division. They are coached by a Jay Brieler and Abdul Abdus-Shakoor. The GCAA chess team also won a trophy for Grand Center earlier in the year at the Red Rook Tournament at McKinley, where Delia Asher and Jackson Schiermeier played as well. They won second in the Eighth and Under division there as well. One of the cool parts of the GCAA chess team is that even though they are only in their first year, they are already racking in the wins and bringing trophies home. All of the team members have played competitively in the past. Despite the team’s small size, other players are starting to take notice of the kids in orange.
