On Tuesday, September 11, 2012, the full GCAA Orchestra highlighted the Second Annual Remembrance Concert marking the anniversary of 9/11.
This concert is special, in that it allows us to remember that day and understand the tragedy that met our shores. It also reminds us that We The People are truly connected. At our performance, the events of 9/11 unfold through student narrators, and our students in the audience are reminded that thousands of people were affected by 9/11, and still are.
Our instrumental music students recently learned an arrangement of “My Country Tis of Thee,” titled “America; Sweet Land of Liberty,” with words by Samuel Francis Smith, and arranged by Michael Story. This original piece has great lyrics–I encouraged my students to look up those lyrics to get a sense of the over-all emotional dynamic of the piece. As this memorial service comes to an end each year we try to focus on what happened, how we as a nation got through it, and how much stronger we now are.
